Safer Lives: Supporting Families in Need
The Race Equality Foundation partnered with Myatt's Field North Community Centre to deliver the South London pilot of SFSC: Safer Lives.
SFSC: Safer Lives is a trauma-informed version of the evidence-based Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities parenting programme. Funded by the Youth Endowment Fund, it supports parents and carers of 11–18-year-olds involved in, or at greater risk of, youth offending. It also forms part of a study into whether targeted parenting support can improve family wellbeing and reduce youth violence in London and Greater Manchester.
The 13-week programme is delivered in person, with small groups attending one three-hour session each week led by two trained facilitators. Myatt's Field North Community Centre hosted the South London pilot, one of four London delivery areas, with a fifth in Greater Manchester.
The first five programmes received 131 referrals across London and Greater Manchester. Sixty-six families joined the study, and 33 parents took part in SFSC: Safer Lives—encouraging early results for the project's next stage.
