Staff Interview: Papa Kojo Mensah-Woode

Papa joined us in 2024 and quickly made himself an indispensable member of the team, central to the smooth running of our Customer Services operations and the Community Centre itself. We recently sat down to pick his brains for a staff interview…

Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do here?
I am Papa Kojo Mensah-Woode, I previously worked as a prisoner custody officer at the Old Bailey. My background is Logistics and Transport, and I have a family of three. I work here as a Customer Services Officer. I like to listen to instrumental music.

I’m often the first point of contact for residents and visitors, and my job is to support tenants, help with queries, and make sure everyone feels heard and looked after. I take care of the facilities and rent out the hall to public.

What drew you to working here, and what keeps you fired up about coming to work every day?

I’ve always enjoyed helping people, and this role gives me the chance to make a real difference in people’s daily lives. Knowing that I can solve a problem or ease someone’s stress keeps me motivated and proud to be part of the team.

Can you share a memorable moment from your time here?

Almost every week I engage the little kids in drawing when they visit the office with their parents and grandparents. I try to put smiles on the faces of the kids. I also recall acting as Santa during kids Christmas party. One parent said to me ‘for once my kid is not afraid of Santa anymore because of you’. Besides that, a lot of the kids were happy to see a black Santa.

What does a typical day look like?

My day usually starts with reviewing messages and checking in on any ongoing issues. Throughout the day, I take calls, respond to emails, and assist tenants in person with everything from repairs to tenancy questions. No two days are ever the same, which keeps things interesting!

What’s one thing about your job that might surprise people in our community?

People might be surprised by how much coordination happens behind the scenes. A simple request often involves working with several departments to get things resolved properly and quickly.

Outside of work, what hobbies or interests do you have?

I enjoy walking, watching football, or anything relaxing. I’m also a fan of cooking new recipes or watching home renovation shows—it ties in nicely with the housing theme.

You’re hosting a dinner party for the people who most inspire and excite you. Apart from me, who’s coming, why are they invited and what are we eating?

I’d invite people who care deeply about community and kindness—maybe Marcus Rashford for his advocacy on free breakfasts for the kids at Primary school, Mohammed Kodus of West Ham for his role in advancing Gahana's hope of going to the World Cup. We’re having Jollof rice and chicken.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received at work?

“Treat every person like they matter—because they do.” That advice reminds me to approach every conversation with patience and empathy, especially on tough days. The community centre is a nice place to work because of the diversity of people one engages on daily bases.

Thank you Papa.
